Pontoon VS avatar boat

Postby abudoc » Sat May 19, 2012 9:56 am

Just a question for those of you who have fished out of pontoons. I am thing of selling the boat in the avatar but have never fished out of a pontoon. Do they make good cat platforms when speed is not an issue. I am thing the extra room would be nice.

The extra space is invaluable its just the hauling to and from that i wouldn't like. But if you ever want to take some kids or friends catfishing with ya you will have plenty of room and not feel cramped and stressed.

I had a pontoon and almost wished I had it back..plenty of room can walk around,, night fishing can take a nap and mine had a little pop up canvas area to change clothes and had a port a pot in it. great to fish out of.

Before you buy, ckeck out some center console boats, very roomie, practical and they have a great layout for this type of fishing.

Thanks for the feed back.
I am considering a center console also, keeping my options open. I just have zero experience with pontoons.

The toons are nice but hard to load in wind or current can be hard to anchor cause they sit so high and need longer net to net fish.

I hope to buy another boat in the next couple of years, I'm either going with another center console or a deep vee.

I have been dragging my poontoon all over the country for at least the last five years. It is comfortable and no more of a problem than anyother boat to load in the wind or cross current. I have anchored in a 5.6 mph current with a 25 lb. anchor no problem. They are slower and it takes more room to turn around But when fishing an all night tournament I can take a cot and get some sleep. Plus I have no problem carrying a 100 gallon live well and a 30 gallon bait well. Not too many boats on the market that can carry an extra 1000 pounds. I will also conseed that it is bulky to haul but at the same time it weighs a lot less than some of the boats out there.

Okay guys I did it. I found a good deal on a used 18' Crest pontoon with a 50 hp. mercury 4 stroke. It's got 2 front fishing seats and a live well. Spent all day and night on it Saturday and really liked it. It ran great with out any problems. I am in the process of taking off the rear sun deck and back bench seat to make room for a rod platform and to give better access to the back. Six rod holders for the back should be enough. I am going to need some more Drift Masters from Bottom Dwellers, other than that I am good to go.
